בלשנות חישובית ועיבוד שפות טבעיות הם תחומי מחקר פעילים בישראל כיום, כמו גם תחומי פעילות נפוצים בתעשיה. הסמינר הישראלי לבלשנות חישובית מהווה זירה לשיתוף פעולה, הן במסגרת אקדמית והן בין האקדמיה והתעשיה, דיווח על פעילות מחקר ועל תוצאותיה וזרז ליצירת קשרים חדשים ולקידומם של קשרים קיימים. הסמינר השנה מהווה המשך טבעי לפגישה הקודמת שנערכה בפברואר 2001 באוניברסיטת חיפה.

הסמינר השנה יכבד את פרופסור עוזי אורנן בהגיעו לגבורות. כמו כן נחגוג את ייסודו של מרכז הידע לתקשוב בשפה העברית שנפתח השנה בטכניון.
